The communication section is a civilian managed organization committed to provide quality public service. To achieve this we encourage each member to take personal responsibility and make individual contributions. There are currently seven full time communication officer positions and 2 part-time positions. The communication supervisor supervises the section.

The communication section operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The communication section is most often the first point of contact the public the public has with the Police and Fire Departments. The section is equipped with a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to monitor officer activity, and a FCIC/NCIC system.

The communication operators perform a full range of radio, computer and telephone operational duties during their shift. Call takers are required to process and prioritize incoming calls for law enforcement, fire services, utilities, traffic maintenance, animal control, and public works. Each of our communication officers have completed an intensive in-service training program under the guidance of certified and experienced communication training officers, which begins with a twelve week training program. All new communications officers are cross-trained through the four positions in the communication section.

The communication officer job requires them to perform multifunctional tasks while responding to callers who are often panic-stricken, scared, or angry. It is the job of the call takers to obtain critical information as accurately and quickly as possible for officers and firefighters.
